If you follow me on twitter @theotherdress you will know that I’m always raving on about my love for Essie nail polishes. If I do a good job of my application; two coats finished off with Seche Vite top coat, it will last me a good week.
Essie have just launched their ‘Luxe Nail Polish Collection’, a selection of dazzling top coats to enhance your polish colour. They are super glitzy and come in pink, gold, white, silver and blue. As my Essie collection is already huge I limited myself to purchasing just the one (for the moment!). I went for ‘a cut above’, which is baby pink flecks of glitter.
Essie’s ‘a cut above’ looks amazing over most colours but I especially love it over the plum red ‘angora cardi.
These would make perfect Christmas gifts wrapped up in with a little bow!
I’m still absolutely loving receiving my Glossybox every month. November’s one is good, but what I’m really looking forward to is next months. Please let it be Christmas themed!!
The only thing that offended me in this month’s beauty box was the awful organza bag the Vichy samples came in. Why oh why!!!
So here’s what I got this month …..
Vichy – Idealia Life Serum 3x3ml samples
Full Size £29.50 for 30ml
Vichy is a great skincare brand and I couldn’t wait to try this serum. The Idelia life serum claims to improve the appearance of your skins quality, and protect from stress, pollution and an unbalanced diet. The serum is a gorgeous consistency and smells really good. I think you would have to purchase the product and use for a month to really see the effects, but nice to have a little try.
Emite Make Up – Micronized Eyeshadow in Dams
£16.80 for 1.48g
Emite Micronized Eyeshadow is free from oil, nickel, parabens, perfume, and is great for contact lens wearers or sensitive eyes. I was quite excited when I found this product in my Glossybox, as at nearly £17 full price, I class this as a luxury makeup item. The colour is identical to Mac’s ‘Shroom’ but is really crumbly and gave really bad fall down. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing this over Mac eyeshadow unless regular eyeshadow’s cause you sensitivity.
Yves Rocher France – Hand Cream
Full Size £1.95 for 75ml
Hand cream is an essential for winter and I welcomed this product in my November Glossybox. It has a light consistency and smells beautiful of chocolate and raspberry.
Elegant Touch – Nail Polish Remover Pads
Full Size £2 for 20 pads
These nail polish remover pads from Elegant Touch are amazing for throwing in your bag when travelling. I am never ever without painted nails, so normally use a bottle of polish remover, but these will be really handy.
Connock London – Kukui Eau de Parfum
£75 for 100ml
Connock London isn’t a fragrance brand I had heard of before, but I love discovering new perfumes. This fragrance has a sultry woody base of sandalwood, with floral top notes. I like it, but I don’t love it. I feel like the smell is a bit too mature for me (more for an older lady without being rude!).
Since I’ve been blogging, my makeup collection has grown and grown. My makeup bag was overflowing and it felt like I had products everywhere! Lots of the big beauty bloggers had been posting pictures and talking a lot about MUJI storage so I decided to give it a go.
MUJI offer really useful acrylic storage suitable for makeup, jewellery and other small dressing table/desk products. They are stackable, so if your collection grows even more you can add to it later.
I purchased one of the wide 2 draw boxes and one of the wide 2 draw with flip lid which fits all of my current cosmetics and nail polishes perfectly. I cannot recommend these boxes more! I can find all my products much easier, and I’ve put all my everyday makeup in the top flip lid so they are really easy to access.
The MUJI storage is good value and they were delivered to the UK within about 3 working days.
MUJI Acrylic Box – 2 Drawers Wide £10.95
MUJI Acrylic Box – 2 Drawers With Flip-Top Lid Wide £11.50
October went as quick as a flash, and here we are approaching the festive season. I feel like I’ve had the Christmas excitement way too early this year! I must stop talking about it until December!
So here are the products I’ve been loving in October:
Katy Perry Killer Queen
I’m not the biggest Katy Perry fan, so would never have picked this up to try in the shops. I had a little sample in my October Glossybox and loved it instantly. It’s a dark, musky, floral fragrance and is really long lasting. I like to go for something light and fruity in the summer, so this Katy Perry fragrance is perfect for winter. I love the almost dagger shape of the bottle and the gold finish There’s not much else to say, but go and have a sniff!
I love love love Essie Nail Polishes. They are long lasting and really easy to apply. The metallic collection is limited edition and the colours are amazing! Essie’s Good as Gold applies really strong and looks perfect with two coats. Maybe a bit festive for October, so something I will definitely be wearing into December. I topped it with Seche Vite to give it a really glossy finish.
L’Oreal Color Riche Collection Privée Freida Mauve Tint
The L’Oreal Color Riche Collection Privée are are limited edition range of nude lipsticks tailor made to suit every skin tone. Now I don’t have the same skin tone as Freida Pinto, but couldn’t resist this shimmery nude mauve shade. The lipsticks are really wearable colours and are very moisturising. They show up quite sheer, so you need to build up to get a good colour. I also love the super pink Doutzen Kroes shade, and will definitely be purchasing a few more!
I have been battling with my hair frizz for a while, and had many people tell me to try Moroccan Oil. I won’t say this has fixed the problem, but it has definitely made an improvement. It leaves your hair really soft and smooth and really reduced blow drying time. The scent is really subtle and it’s easy to apply through your hair.
I love the idea of the beauty advent calendars that I keep hearing about, like the Benefit, Selfridges and Boots ones. They are quite pricey, but if you don’t like chocolate and fancy a treat, great!
I remember a friend telling me about her parents at Christmas. Every year her father buys her mother a charm bracelet, and fills 24 boxes with charms for her to open every day. Wow! What a romantic guy!
If I could create the ultimate beauty advent calendar for you, with a treat for 24 days, here’s what would be hidden behind those doors:
A gorgeous lip colour can add that touch of glamour, and transform your look from day to night.
Colours can vary from a bright red lip down to a sheer nude. It just depends how brave you are feeling!
Lipstick can be applied directly to the lip or using a lip brush. For best results and staying power, use a lip liner then fill in the colour with your lipstick. For ultimate staying power, apply a lip liner to the whole of your lip then cover with your lipstick. The liner will act as a base and will hold your lipstick in place.
Tip: To make sure your lipstick doesn’t transfer onto your teeth, put a finger in your mouth, make an O shape with your lips and pull out your finger slowly. Any excess lipstick will transfer onto your finger.

Soap & Glory – Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss stick
Shades: NUDIST, RAPLUMZEL and BASHFUL
I talk about Soap & Glory’s Gloss Stick’s all the time, but they really are fantastic! They are a cross between a lipstick and a gloss, and are so easy to apply. There is a good selection, and the colours are really strong. These Gloss sticks are super shiny and can be applied lightly for a flash of colour, or strongly for a full on colour lip.
I am new to red lipstick and purchased these recently. The colours are bold and bright and they are very long lasting. The Kate Moss Rimmel lipsticks are really popular and there are a great range of colours. I love these two red shades, and will be going back to purchase some nude colours.
Mac lipsticks are amazing! Mac has a huge selection of colours and there is definitely something to suit everyone. They are moisturising, long lasting and I just love the packaging. Mac also do a great recycling scheme where you can return 6 empty pieces of packaging and get a free lipstick.
Eye shadow is a great way to define a colour in your makeup look, and can really make your eyes ‘pop’. The most commonly used eye shadow is a pressed powder, but it also comes in loose pigment, eye shadow pencil, cream and liquid.
Eye shadows come in three different finishes;
Sheer – for a hint of colour
Matte – a plain colour with no shimmer or shine
Shimmer – has sparkle and/or a metallic colour
There are many shapes and techniques in which you can apply eye shadow. The following tips will help you emphasise your best features.
To make your eyes look bigger and more awake, apply a light shade on the inner corners of your eye.
If you have close set eyes, a darker colour on the outer corner will make them seem further apart.
To create a ‘cat-eye’ look, blend a darker colour on the outer corner of the eye and blend upwards.
To add depth to your eyes, blend colour in to the crease line of your eye socket.

This week for #theSOproject post I’m going to change it up a bit. I normally review a selection of brands and products, but as I’m crazy about Mac’s eye shadow selection, I’m going to give you my top 10 Mac eye shadow shades.
In no particular order, my favourite 10 Mac eye Shadows are:
Glossybox always give a few little hints throughout the month, and I was excited when I heard the theme was ‘dark romance’. Lots of people were convinced we were going to get an on trend plum lipstick, so I was a tad disappointed when I opened the box.
Although there are a few good items, they don’t seem to relate to the theme at all. Sort it out Glossybox!
So here’s what I got this month …..
MeMeMe – Cherub’s Blush – Cheek & Lip Tint
Full Size £5.50 for 12ml
I’ve never been a fan of lip and cheek tints. I think a powder blush is much more blendable and I find the stains hard to remove if you over do it. I’m definitely not brave enough to put this all over my face!
Katy Perry – Killer Queen Fragrance
£29.50 for 50ml
I love this new fragrance from Katy Perry and the fruity floral fragrance is very long lasting. This is something I would wear for the evening, and one small spray gave a good strong fragrance.
Monu – Illuminating Primer
£24.95 for 50ml
I’ve been wanting to try out a primer for a while and look forward to trying out this one. I’ve had a little test and it has a nice fragrance and is very moisturising. Will get back to you on how this one works with foundation.
Premae – Multi-Vit Smoothie Serum
£22.50 for 50ml
Premae is the ‘world’s first allergen-free brand’ and anything they produce is more than kind to your skin. This serum is fragrance fee and should be used before moisturising. My skincare routine is very basic so a serum is something I usually skip. As it’s a ‘kind to skin’ product I will give it a go and see if it makes an improvement.
Eva Cosmetics – Mystic Diamond Argon Oil
£22.70 for 100ml
If you follow me on twitter you will know that I’m always complaining about my frizzy hair. I have just ordered some Moroccan Oil which has been recommended to me, so in the mean time I will give this argon oil a try. I currently use a Tresseme argon oil so will see how this one compares.
Eyeliner can really transform your eyes, and give you that dramatic glamorous look. The technique can be tricky, but once you’ve mastered it, you will never go back.
Eyeliner comes in many types, including gel, liquid, felt pen, pencil and shadow liners. If you’re just starting out, your best bet is to practice with an eye shadow and an angled brush (like the Mac 266 brush). You can plot the line in slowly starting from the inner corner, and if you make a mistake you can just blend it in and start again.
Once you’re feeling confident, try out a liquid liner which comes with a brush (normally in the lid). Look down into a mirror and use one sweep to line the eye from the inner corner outwards. Liquid and gel eyeliners give the most dramatic effect, and once dried will last all day.
An eye pencil can give you a beautiful soft line, and is really easy to blend into your upper and lower water line. If you want to go for the full on smoky eye effect, line the lashes with liquid or gel with a flick, then fill in your upper and lower water line with a smudgy black kohl pencil.
Tip: If you want to create a flick with your liner, draw it in first with your eyes open, then line the eyes and connect the flick.

Mac Eye Kohl in Smoulder
This Mac Kohl Pencil is a makeup bag essential. It’s super soft, easy to blend and never seems to crumble or break. Looks great smudged into the water line.
Avon Supershock Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Blackberry and Black
I heard so many recommendations for the Avon Supershock Pencils that I had to try them out. Like the Mac pencils, they are really soft, easy to blend and are a super bargain price. These look great blended into the upper lash line using a fluffy brush (like the Mac 217 brush).
This is a recent purchase off the back of a recommendation, and I love it already. It comes with a small brush, which I tested out, but I found it easier to apply with my Mac 266 angled brush. The colour is smooth and dark, and once dried it does not budge. Highly recommend!
This L’Oreal Gel Eyeliner is really similar to the Maybelline, and the brush included is identical. There isn’t much to say in regard to differences; apart from this one is a little more expensive. If you’re buying L’Oreal products on multi-buy, I would definitely recommend purchasing this eyeliner.
This felt pen eyeliner from Be a Bombshell cosmetics was included in my September Glossybox, and I also added it in my September favourites. If you’re in a rush, and don’t have time to carefully apply a liquid/gel eyeliner then this is the one for you. It’s so easy to apply and gives a great smooth line.
I’m going to keep this post short and sweet as mascara is pretty self explanatory! I wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without a slick of mascara, and just a few coats can really make a difference to your look.
As far as colour goes, I only ever opt for the blackest of black, but there are many other mascara shades out there. Technique is simple, look down into a mirror and use zig-zag motions to brush the mascara wand through your lashes. I generally use two coats of my favourite lengthening mascara, and for a dramatic look, an extra coat of a volume mascara.

Max Factor – Masterpiece Max
I’ve loved this mascara for years, as it really separates and lengths your lashes. I use this daily and it always gives a really defined lash look with no clumping. The head of the brush bends, which makes application really easy.
I tried this mascara from Maybelline out, as so many beauty bloggers were raving about it. The curved wand makes it easy to coat your lashes and gives a thick false lash effect. I find that I need to use the Max Factor ‘Masterpiece Max’ mascara initially to separate the lashes, then add this one to add the volume. Great for a statement lash look.
The Max Factor ‘False Lash Effect’ Mascara gives a similar full lash effect as the Maybelline mascara. This one gives you gorgeous fluttery lashes with no clumping. Max Factor often have multi-buy deals so I would highly recommend purchasing this one along with the ‘Masterpiece Max’ Mascara.
