If you follow me on twitter @theotherdress you will know that I’m always raving on about my love for Essie nail polishes. If I do a good job of my application; two coats finished off with Seche Vite top coat, it will last me a good week.
Essie have just launched their ‘Luxe Nail Polish Collection’, a selection of dazzling top coats to enhance your polish colour. They are super glitzy and come in pink, gold, white, silver and blue. As my Essie collection is already huge I limited myself to purchasing just the one (for the moment!). I went for ‘a cut above’, which is baby pink flecks of glitter.
Essie’s ‘a cut above’ looks amazing over most colours but I especially love it over the plum red ‘angora cardi.
These would make perfect Christmas gifts wrapped up in with a little bow!
Essie Luxe Nail Polish Collection £7.99
I’m still absolutely loving receiving my Glossybox every month. November’s one is good, but what I’m really looking forward to is next months. Please let it be Christmas themed!!
The only thing that offended me in this month’s beauty box was the awful organza bag the Vichy samples came in. Why oh why!!!
So here’s what I got this month …..
Vichy – Idealia Life Serum 3x3ml samples
Full Size £29.50 for 30ml
Vichy is a great skincare brand and I couldn’t wait to try this serum. The Idelia life serum claims to improve the appearance of your skins quality, and protect from stress, pollution and an unbalanced diet. The serum is a gorgeous consistency and smells really good. I think you would have to purchase the product and use for a month to really see the effects, but nice to have a little try.
Emite Make Up – Micronized Eyeshadow in Dams
£16.80 for 1.48g
Emite Micronized Eyeshadow is free from oil, nickel, parabens, perfume, and is great for contact lens wearers or sensitive eyes. I was quite excited when I found this product in my Glossybox, as at nearly £17 full price, I class this as a luxury makeup item. The colour is identical to Mac’s ‘Shroom’ but is really crumbly and gave really bad fall down. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing this over Mac eyeshadow unless regular eyeshadow’s cause you sensitivity.
Yves Rocher France – Hand Cream
Full Size £1.95 for 75ml
Hand cream is an essential for winter and I welcomed this product in my November Glossybox. It has a light consistency and smells beautiful of chocolate and raspberry.
Elegant Touch – Nail Polish Remover Pads
Full Size £2 for 20 pads
These nail polish remover pads from Elegant Touch are amazing for throwing in your bag when travelling. I am never ever without painted nails, so normally use a bottle of polish remover, but these will be really handy.
Connock London – Kukui Eau de Parfum
£75 for 100ml
Connock London isn’t a fragrance brand I had heard of before, but I love discovering new perfumes. This fragrance has a sultry woody base of sandalwood, with floral top notes. I like it, but I don’t love it. I feel like the smell is a bit too mature for me (more for an older lady without being rude!).
Glossybox – £10 plus £2.95 p&p
Since I’ve been blogging, my makeup collection has grown and grown. My makeup bag was overflowing and it felt like I had products everywhere! Lots of the big beauty bloggers had been posting pictures and talking a lot about MUJI storage so I decided to give it a go.
MUJI offer really useful acrylic storage suitable for makeup, jewellery and other small dressing table/desk products. They are stackable, so if your collection grows even more you can add to it later.
I purchased one of the wide 2 draw boxes and one of the wide 2 draw with flip lid which fits all of my current cosmetics and nail polishes perfectly. I cannot recommend these boxes more! I can find all my products much easier, and I’ve put all my everyday makeup in the top flip lid so they are really easy to access.
The MUJI storage is good value and they were delivered to the UK within about 3 working days.
MUJI Acrylic Box – 2 Drawers Wide £10.95
MUJI Acrylic Box – 2 Drawers With Flip-Top Lid Wide £11.50
October went as quick as a flash, and here we are approaching the festive season. I feel like I’ve had the Christmas excitement way too early this year! I must stop talking about it until December!
So here are the products I’ve been loving in October:
Katy Perry – Killer Queen Fragrance, Essie – Good as Gold, Moroccanoil treatment and L’Oreal Collection Privee by Frieda
Katy Perry Killer Queen
I’m not the biggest Katy Perry fan, so would never have picked this up to try in the shops. I had a little sample in my October Glossybox and loved it instantly. It’s a dark, musky, floral fragrance and is really long lasting. I like to go for something light and fruity in the summer, so this Katy Perry fragrance is perfect for winter. I love the almost dagger shape of the bottle and the gold finish There’s not much else to say, but go and have a sniff!
Katy Perry Killer Queen 100ml £30.00
Essie Metallic Collection Good as Gold
I love love love Essie Nail Polishes. They are long lasting and really easy to apply. The metallic collection is limited edition and the colours are amazing! Essie’s Good as Gold applies really strong and looks perfect with two coats. Maybe a bit festive for October, so something I will definitely be wearing into December. I topped it with Seche Vite to give it a really glossy finish.
Essie – Good as Gold
Essie Metallic Collection Good as Gold £7.99
L’Oreal Color Riche Collection Privée Freida Mauve Tint
The L’Oreal Color Riche Collection Privée are are limited edition range of nude lipsticks tailor made to suit every skin tone. Now I don’t have the same skin tone as Freida Pinto, but couldn’t resist this shimmery nude mauve shade. The lipsticks are really wearable colours and are very moisturising. They show up quite sheer, so you need to build up to get a good colour. I also love the super pink Doutzen Kroes shade, and will definitely be purchasing a few more!
L’Oreal Collection Privee, Freida Pinto: Barely Parma
L’Oreal Color Riche Collection Prive Freida Mauve Tint £8.19
Moroccanoil Oil Treatment
I have been battling with my hair frizz for a while, and had many people tell me to try Moroccan Oil. I won’t say this has fixed the problem, but it has definitely made an improvement. It leaves your hair really soft and smooth and really reduced blow drying time. The scent is really subtle and it’s easy to apply through your hair.
Moroccanoil Oil Treatment 25ml £13.45

What are your favourite winter colours?
For the last installment of The SO Project we are looking at Beauty tools.
My most used beauty tools would have to be my makeup brushes, which really transformed my makeup when I started using them. I have a few random drug store brushes, but the best brushes have to be Mac and Real Techniques.
Best Makeup Brush Buys
Mac 217 Blending Brush
The Mac 217 blending Brush is an excellent makeup tool, and I could not live without it! You can apply your eye shadow colour quickly, and does all the work for you when contouring the eye. The Mac brushes can be a little expensive, but if you look after them, they will last forever.
Mac 217 Blending Brush £18.00
Mac 239 Eye Shader Brush
The Mac 239 is a flat, firm brush which can be used to pat on eye shadow. If you are wearing a strong colour, the Mac 239 brush will allow you to apply eye shadow heavily, which can later be blended in using the Mac 217.
Mac 239 Eye Shader Brush £20.00
Mac 266 Small Angle Brush
I have had my Mac 266 brush for about 13 years, and it’s still in perfect condition! It’s great for lining the eyes and filling in brows. If you’re not confident at applying liquid eyeliner, the Mac 266 brush will allow you to easily apply colour to the lash line.
Mac 266 Small Angle Brush £16.50
Mac Brush Cleanser
The Mac brush cleaning fluid is a must have for quickly and thoroughly cleaning your brushes. You just need to add a few drops to a cloth or kitchen towel, and swirl your brushes around to clean them. Using this fluid makes your brushes come out looking new!
Mac Brush Cleanser £10.00
Real Techniques Expert Face Brush
The Real Techniques Expert Face Brush is brilliant for blending in foundation to give you a pixel perfect complexion. The bristles are soft bur firm, and make foundation application really easy.
Real Techniques Expert Face Brush £9.99
Real Techniques Powder Brush
The Real Techniques Powder Brush is super soft and great for quickly dusting powder all over your face. The good thing about Real Techniques is the high quality and affordability.
Real Techniques Powder Brush £10.99
Real Techniques Blush Brush
The Real Techniques Blusher Brush has the same qualities as the powder brush, but this one has contoured bristles. It’s probably too large to contour with, but great for applying all over bronzer or a bit of blusher.
Real Techniques Blush Brush £9.99
I am normally anti anything Christmas before December, but the phrase ‘if you can’t beat em, join em’ comes to mind. It’s just EVERYWHERE already.
So yes, rather than fight it, I will just join in with the holiday cheer, that little bit too early.
Last year I decided I wanted a Christmas jumper a few days before Christmas day, when you couldn’t get one anywhere. So this year I’ve been on the look out early to ensure I get my Christmas jumper!

I love the idea of the beauty advent calendars that I keep hearing about, like the Benefit, Selfridges and Boots ones. They are quite pricey, but if you don’t like chocolate and fancy a treat, great!
I remember a friend telling me about her parents at Christmas. Every year her father buys her mother a charm bracelet, and fills 24 boxes with charms for her to open every day. Wow! What a romantic guy!
If I could create the ultimate beauty advent calendar for you, with a treat for 24 days, here’s what would be hidden behind those doors:
- Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Primer

What items would you love to see in a beauty advent calendar?
A gorgeous lip colour can add that touch of glamour, and transform your look from day to night.
Colours can vary from a bright red lip down to a sheer nude. It just depends how brave you are feeling!
Lipstick can be applied directly to the lip or using a lip brush. For best results and staying power, use a lip liner then fill in the colour with your lipstick. For ultimate staying power, apply a lip liner to the whole of your lip then cover with your lipstick. The liner will act as a base and will hold your lipstick in place.
Tip: To make sure your lipstick doesn’t transfer onto your teeth, put a finger in your mouth, make an O shape with your lips and pull out your finger slowly. Any excess lipstick will transfer onto your finger.

Soap & Glory – Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss stick
L – R: Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in Nudist, Raplumzel and Bashful
Shades: NUDIST, RAPLUMZEL and BASHFUL
I talk about Soap & Glory’s Gloss Stick’s all the time, but they really are fantastic! They are a cross between a lipstick and a gloss, and are so easy to apply. There is a good selection, and the colours are really strong. These Gloss sticks are super shiny and can be applied lightly for a flash of colour, or strongly for a full on colour lip.
Soap & Glory – Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss stick £8.00
Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss
L – R:Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in 01 and 107
Shades: 01 and 107
I am new to red lipstick and purchased these recently. The colours are bold and bright and they are very long lasting. The Kate Moss Rimmel lipsticks are really popular and there are a great range of colours. I love these two red shades, and will be going back to purchase some nude colours.
Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss £5.49
L -R: Mac Lipstick in Brave (Satin) and Angel (Frost)
Shades: Brave (Satin) and Angel (Frost)
Mac lipsticks are amazing! Mac has a huge selection of colours and there is definitely something to suit everyone. They are moisturising, long lasting and I just love the packaging. Mac also do a great recycling scheme where you can return 6 empty pieces of packaging and get a free lipstick.
Mac Lipstick £15.00
My friend recently won a competition, and the prize was £200 gift card for ANY chosen shop. How exciting! I made lots of suggestions and urged her to treat herself, but in the end she opted for a DIY store so she could make some home improvements. What!?!?!?
I’m sure you can relate to my disappointment on behalf of said friend, who I believe should have splurged it all on a handbag or glam pair of shoes. Anyway, when she was asking for my advice initially, it was quite enjoyable to think about what I would do if it were mine.
After toying with my imaginary gift card, I settled for Topshop. I would just like to add that at no point did a DIY/supermarket/home textiles store cross my mind as an option.
So here’s what I would buy from Topshop….
Floral Jaquard PJ Trousers £38.00
Flat Stud Purse £30.00
Black Stone Collar £7.50
Lips in Wicked £8.00
Nails in Circus £6.00
See it all on Pintrest
If you won a £200 gift card for anywhere, where would you choose and what would you buy?
